Flanagan Farm vs. Walnut Hill: Which Maine Wedding Weekend Venue Fits Your Style?
Choosing a wedding venue is rarely just a practical decision. It's an instinct. The sense that a place feels just right for who you two are and the celebration you're imagining together.
At The Maine Barns, our two properties sit just twenty-five minutes outside Portland, Maine, each offering their own atmosphere, aesthetic, and rhythm. Flanagan Farm and Walnut Hill share the same philosophy of hosting — one exclusive wedding or event per weekend, private estate grounds, and the unhurried pace of a full wedding weekend — but they feel distinct in ways that matter.
Flanagan Farm, located in Buxton, spreads across 66 acres of pastoral countryside. Broad tenting lawns, a wildflower meadow, a forest ceremony grove, and an apple orchard allow different parts of the weekend to unfold within their own setting, atmosphere, and vibe. The property is expansive and highly adaptable, hosting celebrations across all four seasons including winter, and is also well suited to large-scale build outs.

Walnut Hill, in North Yarmouth, offers a more intimate expression of Maine character. The garden-centered estate features mature landscaping that evolves beautifully through the seasons, a restored farmhouse, a historic 1887 barn, and a truly picturesque ceremony grove tucked beneath a lush canopy of trees. The atmosphere is timeless, quietly elegant, and deeply personal — the best of classic New England without a trace of stiffness. It's a property that tends to stay with you.

What follows is an introduction to both and the differences worth noting as you begin to imagine your weekend.
What they share
Before exploring the differences, it's worth knowing what remains consistent across both properties.
Flanagan Farm and Walnut Hill each offer fully climate-controlled event spaces, beautifully updated restrooms, on-site farmhouse accommodations for up to 12 guests, and private forest ceremony groves. Each celebration is supported by a dedicated on-site property manager who support logistics, vendor coordination, parking, restroom maintenance, and other behind-the-scenes property elements so that couples never have to think about it.
Both properties sit approximately twenty-five minutes from downtown Portland, which functions as a natural hub for destination guests: strong hotel options, exceptional dining, direct airport access, and easy shuttle logistics. The venues themselves offer the privacy and beauty of classic New England estates. They are close enough to the city to be accessible and far enough to feel like a true arrival.
Do you want the weekend to feel expansive or intimate?
This is often the question that decides it.
Flanagan Farm spreads across 66 acres of meadow, orchard, and woodland. Its scale invites a weekend that unfolds across distinct settings — a ceremony tucked within the pines, cocktails in one barn, dinner and dancing in another, a farewell brunch on the lawn. There's a sense of discovery to the property, a feeling that the weekend has its own geography.
Walnut Hill is a more intimate four-acre garden-forward estate. The gardens, ceremony space, tenting locations, and reception areas feel closely connected, naturally drawing guests together and creating a warm, cohesive atmosphere throughout the weekend.
Which venue best fits your guest count?
Both venues accommodate generous celebrations, with slightly different capacities.
Flanagan Farm hosts up to 250 guests with tenting — well-suited to larger celebrations or couples who want flexibility with their list. For dinner and dancing in the barn, the sweet spot is 140–160 guests.
Walnut Hill hosts up to 200 guests with tenting, a scale many couples find ideal for maintaining an intimate estate atmosphere while still welcoming a full circle of family and friends. For dinner and dancing in the barn, 120–140 guests tends to feel just right.
Which venue is better for gardens and classic New England character?
If a lush, layered landscape is central to your vision, Walnut Hill may really speak to you. The estate's mature gardens and thoughtfully designed grounds evolve beautifully from spring through fall — perennial borders, woodland paths, and a ceremony grove set beneath a canopy of trees.
Couples drawn to florals, color, and the romance of a garden wedding often find themselves pulled toward Walnut Hill almost immediately. The restored farmhouse, elegant barn, and established grounds evoke the best of traditional New England estates, while still delivering on an elevated and refined overall sensibility.

How does tenting work at each property?
Both venues incorporate tenting in ways that feel elegant and design-forward rather than utilitarian.
At Flanagan Farm, the broad lawns and flexible layout allow tenting to take many forms — cocktail hour beneath a tent before dinner in the barn, a fully tented reception overlooking the wildflower meadow, or a combination that uses the property's different spaces across the weekend.
At Walnut Hill, two tenting locations are available: the cocktail lawn off the bluestone patio and the evergreen dining grove, where couples can host dinner before moving inside for dancing. Tenting here feels naturally integrated into the estate setting rather than added on.

One important distinction: if you're envisioning outdoor dancing beneath a sailcloth or clear-top tent, Flanagan Farm is the stronger fit. Its expansive lawns and flexible sound policies allow dinner and dancing to flow together outdoors. At Walnut Hill, reception-level sound for dancing is best suited to the barn.

Late nights, fireworks, and winter weddings
A few practical details worth knowing as you compare.
At both venues, your ceremony may begin at any time that suits the flow of your overall celebration. Standard event end time at both venues is 10:30 p.m., with guests departing by 11:00 p.m. Flanagan Farm offers a late-night extension allowing guests to remain on-site until midnight — a detail many couples appreciate if they're envisioning an extended celebration or after-hours gathering. Both venues are also close to Portland for those who want to continue the evening downtown.
Flanagan Farm is also one of the few venues in southern Maine with zoning permission for private fireworks displays — a rare opportunity for couples who want to punctuate the evening with something memorable.

For winter celebrations, Flanagan Farm is the clear choice. The property hosts weddings and events year-round, and its heated barn and snow-covered landscape take on a particularly magical quality in the colder months.
